AUGUST TURAK FOUNDATION

HISTORY

EST.1999

The August Turak Foundation, formerly known as the Self Knowledge Symposium Foundation, was founded in 1999 by August Turak with aid of Dr. Will Willimon, former Dean of Duke University Chapel, as 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, with a vision to inspire and educate. The foundation began as an educational nonprofit dedicated to supporting students on their spiritual journeys. During its early years, August Turak actively engaged with students at NC State, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holding weekly meetings to explore profound philosophical and spiritual questions.

The groups were deeply engaged with the works of influential thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Pascal, St. John of the Cross, Huang Po, and others, seeking to uncover the deeper meanings and purposes of life.

MISSSION

As time went on, the foundation’s mission was clear: to foster a deeper understanding of self-knowledge and the transformative power of service and selflessness.

This commitment was reflected in the foundation’s activities, which included thoughtful discussions, workshops, and community events aimed at personal and collective growth. The NC State chapter, in particular, continued its work until 2008, exemplifying the foundation’s enduring impact. Through these efforts, the foundation has consistently inspired individuals and communities to embrace a path of self-improvement and meaningful contribution. The legacy of this mission continues to drive the foundation's initiatives, ensuring that the values of selflessness and personal development remain central to its work.

In addition to these initiatives, the foundation also emphasizes its dedication to service and education through special scholarship and award programs.

The Educating Emily Fund and The Coach Campbell Award are key components of our commitment to supporting youth who embody the values of service and excellence. These programs are designed to further the foundation's mission of inspiring meaningful and impactful growth in various fields.

In 2008, Melissa Hawks joined the August Turak Foundation as Executive Director. With a strong background in theology and a deep commitment to service and selflessness, Melissa’s expertise has been pivotal in advancing the foundation's mission. Her leadership has led to significant improvements, including the expansion of programs, increased community outreach, and enhanced operational efficiency. Melissa’s strategic vision and dedication to our core values have greatly contributed to the foundation's growth and impact.

Now rebranded as the August Turak Foundation, the organization remains committed to its mission with a broader focus. The foundation enhances the quality of life for individuals, communities, and organizations by integrating diverse theological perspectives and promoting holistic development. The primary methodologies for fulfilling this mission include writing, seminars, lectures, speaking engagements, keynotes, workshops, retreats, and other educational programs.
